And honestly, that can make choosing a dive shop harder, not easier.

So instead of telling you that we are automatically the “best,” here are the questions we think every diver should ask before booking a scuba diving trip in Cancún.
1. What is the best scuba dive shop in Cancún?
There isn't one dive shop that is perfect for every diver.
A newly certified diver may want a completely different experience from someone with 500 dives who wants deeper reefs, currents, wrecks or a private boat.
Some divers want a large operation with many boats and scheduled departures.
Others prefer a small group, a quieter boat and an instructor who actually remembers their name.
So when searching for the best dive shop in Cancún, don't only look at the stars or the number of reviews.
Ask:
How many divers are in each group?
Who will be my instructor or divemaster?
Where do the boats leave from?
Is transportation included?
What is included in the price?
What happens if the weather changes?
Do they regularly dive the sites they are recommending?
Can they adapt the diving to my experience level?

2. Why are there so many scuba dive shops in Cancún?
Because Cancún is one of the most popular diving destinations in Mexico.
The location gives divers access to several completely different underwater experiences.
You can dive the Caribbean reefs directly from Cancún, explore the MUSA underwater museum, visit reefs around Punta Nizuc and Isla Mujeres, travel to Cozumel, or head inland toward the famous cenotes of the Riviera Maya.
That means there isn't really one type of “Cancún diving.”
There are several.
And that's something worth understanding before you book.
3. Is scuba diving in Cancun actually good?
Yes — but it depends on what you are looking for.
Cancún is not Cozumel, and Cozumel is not a cenote.
They are different experiences.
Cancún offers warm Caribbean water, coral reefs, tropical fish, turtles and interesting underwater sites such as MUSA.
Cozumel is famous for its drift diving, current and spectacular reef walls.
The cenotes are completely different again, with freshwater, stalactites, incredible light effects and cavern environments.
One of our favorite things about diving from Cancún is that you don't have to choose only one type of diving.
You can combine several experiences during the same vacation.
4. Can beginners go scuba diving in Cancun?
Absolutely.
In fact, scuba diving in Cancún for beginners is one of the questions we receive most often.
If you are not certified, you can usually start with a Discover Scuba Diving experience with a qualified instructor.
You don't need to become an expert before your first dive.
But you do need proper instruction.
A good beginner experience should not feel like:
“Here is your equipment. Jump in.”
You should have time to understand the equipment, practice the basic skills and communicate with your instructor before and during the dive.
And please don't be embarrassed if you are nervous.
Almost everybody remembers their first breath underwater.
That strange little moment of:
“Wait... I'm actually breathing underwater.”
Then, usually, the smile appears.
5. How do I choose between the different dive shops in Cancun?
This is probably the most useful question on the entire list.

Safety?
Communication?
Small groups?

Organization?

Whether the company actually did what it promised?
A review saying “Great trip!” is nice.
A review explaining exactly what happened during the day is much more useful.
And don't be afraid to read the less-than-perfect reviews too.
No dive operation can control the weather, visibility, waves or whether a particular animal decides to show up for work that morning.
8. What are the best places to go scuba diving from Cancún?
That depends on your certification, experience and what you want to see.
Popular diving experiences around Cancún include:
Cancún reef diving
The reefs around Cancún can be a great option for both newer and experienced divers.
You may encounter tropical fish, turtles, rays, lobsters, moray eels and plenty of smaller marine life.
MUSA – Museo Subacuático de Arte
MUSA is one of the most recognizable underwater attractions in the Cancún area.
The museum combines underwater art installations with marine life and is one of those dives that gives you something different to talk about when you get home.
Isla Mujeres
Depending on conditions and the type of trip, Isla Mujeres can offer interesting reef diving and a change of scenery from the reefs directly off Cancún.
Cenotes
Now we are talking about something completely different.
Cenote diving is one of the reasons people travel to the Riviera Maya specifically to dive.
The freshwater, rock formations and light beams can be spectacular.
But cenote diving should be matched to the diver's experience and training.
It isn't simply “another reef dive.”
Cozumel
If you love current, drift diving and Caribbean walls, Cozumel deserves a place on your itinerary.
The logistics are different from diving directly in Cancún, so ask your dive shop how much travel time is involved before booking a day trip.
9. Is cenote diving in Cancún?
Technically, the famous cenotes are not in Cancún itself.
Most of the well-known cenotes used for diving are inland in the Riviera Maya and Yucatán Peninsula, including areas toward Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen and Tulum.
But cenote diving from Cancún is absolutely possible.
A good dive center should explain the transportation and total time involved rather than making it sound like the cenote is five minutes from your hotel.
Because it isn't.

10. Can I dive cenotes if I am a beginner?
This is where you should ask questions before booking.
There are different types of cenote experiences, and not every site is appropriate for every diver.
Cavern diving requires specific procedures, equipment considerations and an understanding of overhead environments.

You can experience scuba diving under the direct supervision of a qualified instructor without already holding an Open Water certification.

There is no prize for pretending you are more comfortable than you are.
