C-58 GENERAL PEDRO ANAYA
Dive into History: The Fascinating Story of Cancun's C-58 Shipwreck
The Storied Past of the C-58
From Naval Minesweeper to Artificial Reef
The C-58, originally known as the USS Harlequin (AM-365), has a remarkable history. Built as an Admirable-class minesweeper for the US Navy during World War II, the USS Harlequin served valiantly in the Atlantic. Decommissioned in 1946, the ship was placed in reserve and remained inactive until the early 1960s.
In 1962, the Mexican Navy purchased the vessel and renamed it ARM DM-20. Over the years, the ship underwent multiple transformations and name changes. From 1976 to 1978, it was converted into an oceanographic research vessel, renamed ARM Oceanográfico (H02), and later became ARM General Pedro María Anaya (A08). In the late 1990s, it was renamed once more to ARM Aldebaran (BE02), serving as a school ship until its retirement.
In May 2000, the Mexican government decided to sink the ship off the coast of Cancun to create an artificial reef and a spectacular dive site. This initiative not only preserved a piece of naval history but also contributed to marine conservation and tourism.

The C-58 is located at a depth of 85 feet, about a 40-minute boat ride from Cancun (check Dive Sites)
C-58 shipwreck is a thrilling dive for advanced divers. The depth and currents make this a challenging but rewarding dive. As a drift dive, there is often no descent line, requiring all divers to enter the water simultaneously and descend together. Due to these conditions, dive groups are kept small, with only 4 divers per dive leader, ensuring a safe and enjoyable Wreck Diving experience.

Hurricanes Ivan & Wilma's Impact

In 2004 Hurricane Ivan broke it into 2 parts and later in 2005, Hurricane Wilma caused significant damage to the C-58, breaking the ship more and separate the pieces. This unexpected event created new opportunities for divers to explore the interior of the wreck, with large openings and swim-throughs now accessible. The split structure offers a unique diving experience, allowing for deeper exploration and interaction with the marine environment.
