Every year, without fail, I ask myself the same question:Where will I be diving next?
And if you’re reading this, chances are you’re asking yourself the same thing.
Scuba diving has a funny way of pulling us around the world—sometimes for legendary sites we’ve dreamed about for years, sometimes for places we didn’t expect to fall in love with. For 2026, the list of incredible dive destinations is as strong as ever.
Based on global rankings, diver feedback, popularity, conservation efforts, and my own personal experience (and honesty), here are my Top 7 Best Places to Dive in the World in 2026.
No hype. No filters. Just great diving.
🌍 The 7 Best Diving Destinations in the World for 2026

🥇 1. Sipadan, Malaysia
Legendary. Protected. Unforgettable.
Sipadan consistently ranks as one of the best scuba diving destinations in the world, and honestly, it deserves every bit of that reputation.
This tiny island rises straight out of deep water, creating dramatic walls covered in life. Every dive feels “big.” Big schools. Big encounters. Big moments. Turtles are everywhere, reef sharks cruise by casually, and the fish density is something you rarely see anymore.
For me, Barracuda Point Reef is non-negotiable. When you hit it at the right time, the barracuda tornado is simply unreal. I still consider it the best ocean dive I’ve ever done.
Best for:
Experienced divers
Big schools and pelagic life
Iconic wall dives
Why it’s included:Sipadan is protected, limited-access, and consistently ranked 1 worldwide. It’s the definition of a bucket-list dive destination.
My recommendation:👉 Go with timing. Plan dives around tides and currents, and do Barracuda Point more than once if possible.

🥈 2. Cenote Diving, Mexico
The Best Cavern & Cave Diving on Earth
Cenote diving isn’t just different—it’s on another planet.
Crystal-clear freshwater, dramatic light beams, massive limestone formations, and complete silence. It’s calm, controlled, and deeply immersive. Even divers with thousands of ocean dives often surface saying, “I wasn’t expecting that.”
Mexico’s cenotes are unmatched anywhere in the world. Period.
Best for:
Cavern and cave lovers
Divers who enjoy calm, precise diving
Underwater photographers
Why it’s included:No other destination offers this scale, clarity, and accessibility for cavern and cave diving.
My recommendation:👉 Bring your logbook and a 7mm wetsuit. The water isn’t warm, and good buoyancy makes the experience much better. For cavern and cave lovers, this is the best place in the world—by far.

🥉 3. Raja Ampat, Indonesia
Pure Biodiversity Overload
Raja Ampat is often described as the most biodiverse marine environment on the planet—and once you dive there, it’s easy to see why.
Every dive is packed with life: coral gardens, tiny macro critters, huge schools of fish, and pristine reefs that feel untouched. What I love most is how much you can experience without moving far—different dive styles all in one region.
Best for:
Reef lovers
Macro & wide-angle photographers
Divers who want variety
Why it’s included:Raja Ampat regularly tops scientific and diver rankings for biodiversity and reef health.
My recommendation:👉 Spend at least a week. There’s too much diving here to rush it. Slow trips are rewarded.

4. Great Barrier Reef, Australia
Go Offshore or Miss the Best Part
The Great Barrier Reef is huge—so huge that many people never actually see its best sections.
While coastal dives can be enjoyable, my personal opinion is simple: the real magic is far from shore. The best reefs, healthiest corals, and most exciting dives require commitment.
Best for:
Divers who want scale and variety
Shark and reef encounters
Long dive trips
Why it’s included:It’s the largest reef system on Earth and still delivers world-class diving when done right.
My recommendation:👉 Choose a 7–10 day liveaboard. Places like Osprey Reef, about 300 km offshore from Cairns, are absolutely worth it if you want the full experience.

5. Galápagos Islands, Ecuador
Raw, Wild, and Demanding
Galápagos diving isn’t easy—and that’s exactly why it’s special.
Cold water, strong currents, and challenging conditions reward you with encounters found almost nowhere else: massive schools of hammerhead sharks, playful sea lions, and marine iguanas swimming underwater.
This is not relaxed diving. This is adventure diving.
Best for:
Advanced divers
Big animal encounters
Adrenaline seekers
Why it’s included:Galápagos is legendary for pelagic life and extreme biodiversity.
My recommendation:👉 Prepare for cold and currents. If you’re comfortable with challenging conditions, this will be one of your most memorable trips.

6. Maldives
Highly Ranked, Still on My List
I’ll be honest—I haven’t personally dived the Maldives yet. But when nearly every global ranking, dive magazine, and experienced diver puts it near the top, it earns its place here.
From manta rays and whale sharks to easy, warm-water diving, everything points to consistently great experiences.
Best for:
Relaxed diving
Sharks and mantas
Liveaboards and resort diving
Why it’s included:One of the most popular and consistently ranked dive destinations in the world.
My recommendation:👉 Trust the rankings for now. I’ll write properly about it once I’ve been there myself 😉

7. Cancun & Cozumel, Mexico
Everything in One Place (And Family-Friendly)
Cancun and Cozumel together offer something rare: huge diving variety in a single trip.
You get:
Caribbean reef diving
World-class drift diving in Cozumel
Seasonal bull sharks
Cenotes
Easy conditions for beginners and fun dives for experienced divers
It’s also one of the best destinations to combine diving with family travel, thanks to beaches, culture, and non-diving activities.
Best for:
All levels of divers
Mixed groups and families
Variety in one destination
Why it’s included:Top-level diving, multiple environments, easy logistics, and great value.
My recommendation:👉 Perfect if you want a little bit of everything. If you’re planning to dive here, you can explore personalized trips, courses, and cenote diving with Scuba Total in Cancun and Cozumel:👉 https://www.scubatotal.com
🤿 Final Thoughts: Best Places to Dive in 2026
There’s no single “best” dive destination—only the one that fits your style, experience, and curiosity.
Whether you’re chasing barracudas in Sipadan, floating through cenotes, or drifting effortlessly in Cozumel, 2026 is shaping up to be an incredible year to be underwater.
So I’ll ask you one last time:
Where will you be diving in 2026?
P.S. Of course, this list could easily be much longer. There are many other amazing dive destinations that didn’t make my Top 7—not because they aren’t incredible, but because they offer a different style of diving that deserves its own story. Places like Revillagigedo, famous for giant mantas and wild pelagic encounters; the Red Sea in Egypt, with easy access, colorful reefs, and historic wrecks; Komodo, Indonesia, known for strong currents and big life; the Philippines, offering an incredible mix of macro, reefs, and pelagics; the Bahamas and Bimini, legendary for shark diving; and even Antarctica, which is truly in a category of its own. All of them are absolutely worth visiting, and I’ll be writing about them soon—because each one deserves more than just a few lines.
